With an area of 268,000 square miles and a population of more than 19 million, Texas is the second largest state in both size and population. Stretching 800 miles from Louisiana to New Mexico, Texas was ruled by Spain and Mexico before becoming an independent nation in 1836. It joined the Union in 1845.
